Alright so instead of giving you a ton of different posts to riffle through for your Gamescom news, here’s a big compilation of everything you’ll need to know! First let’s talk about the PS4, the official release date will be November 15th in North America and November 29th in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. I personally figured a mid to late November launch was best, for us here in the United States we have Black Friday which is a major shopping day for us and it would be best to release before this date as most people shop for Christmas presents for their friends and family that day. Also the system will be coming out with 2 color variants for the DualShock 4 coming in Magma Red and Wave Blue and for North America it will be coming out later this year, but not at launch. Similar to the Xbox 360 to Xbox One game upgrade program, Sony will be doing a similar one in which if you buy the PS3 version you’ll be able to get the download version for a “significantly discounted price” and as of right now those games include Battlefield 4, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and Watch Dogs although I imagine other games will jump on as well. The Share button is getting a new use out of it now as well. It will now stream your games onto Twitch.tv in addition to everything else it’ll do. Originally you could only use UStream as your streaming service, but they’ve now added Twitch to the list which was originally thought to be a Xbox One exclusive. Another thing is Playstation Plus and that if you get the new PS4, you’ll have a 2 week trial of the program out of the box giving you access to dozens of content including Driveclub and for those of you with a PS3 they’ve announced Assassin’s Creed III as being the free game for September. Finally we saw some of the PS4’s UI (user interface) and it looks very streamlined. From what it looks like, you’ll still have the PS3’s XMB, but it will be heavily modified and won’t be the main focus of the UI. You’ll be able to also look up live streams of games going on and if you have those games you can join into that specific game with a click of a button and you’ll automatically get set up and spawn into the game within a few moments. Check out the trailer below.
Playstation 4 releases November 15th in North America
Now to discuss some Vita stuff and there was plenty of Vita talk at Gamescom. The biggest news is probably that the system is receiving a price drop to $199 effective now in Europe and North America and this includes the Walking Dead PS Vita bundle that also released yesterday and that comes with a 4GB memory card AND a free copy of The Walking Dead so if you haven’t picked one up yet, that’s an amazing deal. Also with the system was a price drop of the memory cards which now run: $79.99 for the 32GB, $39.99 for the 16GB, $19.99 for the 8GB, and finally $14.99 for the 4GB. It wasn’t just price drops for Vita though, if you’re a fan of a lot of crazy guns and violence then you’ll love that you’re now getting Borderlands 2 on the PS Vita. Other games announced to be put onto the Vita will include Fez, Starbound, and Velocity 2X which are all indie games released on other platforms originally and getting ported over.
A couple other indie games that will launch on Sony consoles will be Rogue Legacy, Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, Volume, and Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. There’s also a brand new title coming to Vita as well called Big Fest and this will be THE game for the music lovers out there who love going to concerts and festivals and having a blast. You’ll get to use real world unsigned bands and display their music and create your own musical festival that you can share with your friends or just sit back and listen yourself. Imagine a Sims Theme Park, but with just music stuff as you’ll be able to build all sorts of stuff to gain attractions and have your virtual fans enjoy themselves. Below is the trailer.
Playstation Vita is now $199.99
Finally the games for PS4 and there were plenty of them. A re-imagining of an old game released on the Amiga called Shadow of the Beast as a PS4 exclusive and looks to be pretty cool with this demonic looking creature brutally slicing enemies in half and taking on giant monsters and all. Another game. If you enjoyed Super Stardust Delta on the PS Vita, you’ll probably like Resogun which is another game from the same developers launching on the PS4 and will be a space shooter and will carry traditional 2D shooter tactics, but with a few new twists thrown in there. Rime is going to be a peaceful game that reminds you a lot of games like Ico and Journey and The Legend of Zelda (more of the exploration aspect of LoZ), the game will involve a lot of silent exploration and puzzles. A few other indie titles such as Helldivers is releasing which is very similar to the Starship Trooper movies and personally has a Doom feel to it, if Doom was a top down shooter that is and it will be releasing on PS4, PS3 and Vita.
The other one is Everyone’s Gone to the Rapture which is an apocalyptic game in which you begin the game at the end of the world and this has a definite eerie look to it, but is very interesting. Another Free-To-Play MMO was announced for the PS4 as well and will have the WWII MMO, War Thunder, coming to the console this year and if you want to play it now on PC they have the beta still open. Sony also touched base with a couple of their currently announced games such as inFAMOUS Second Son as they debuted a new character in the game and details some more story on Deslin and his brother with their latest trailer. Also they showed off the multiplayer action in Killzone 4: Shadow Fall as players will be able to create their own game modes basically with the newest game and also every new map coming as DLC will be free as well. Below is the list of PS4 launch titles with bolded ones being those that are exclusive to next gen:
- NBA 2K14 (2K)
- Call of Duty: Ghosts (Activision)
- Skylanders Swap Force (Activision)
- Need for Speed: Rivals (Electronic Arts)
- Battlefield 4 (Electronic Arts)

- FIFA 14 (Electronic Arts)
